Waterloo, Ontario, Canada (August 22, 2018) — by Wendy Jandrew

Wilfrid Laurier University launched the first fully online Master of Computer Science program in Canada on Aug. 22, 2018. The university will work with its online program management partner Keypath Education for the online program, which is being offered to Canadian and international students.

The online Master of Computer Science program is designed for active computer science professionals and those with an undergraduate degree in computer science, applied computing, computer engineering, information systems, mathematics or another related field who aspire to reach their full potential. The program sets itself apart by cultivating a high level of technical knowledge and the practical real-world skill set required by employers worldwide.

The curriculum includes parallel programming, application development, algorithm design, data mining and analysis, cyber-attack and defence, machine learning and technology entrepreneurship. Students will be trained to turn their technical knowledge into practical leadership skills, real-world development to define the future of programming, development and technology entrepreneurship.

The online program will mirror the on-campus degree and will be taught by the same world-class faculty. It combines exceptional education with the convenience of online learning.

Laurier began its partnership with Keypath in 2016 and launched the first policing programs of their kind available online. Later, the university expanded into public safety and social work programs. The new program comes as a direct response to growing industry demand.

“We are excited to launch the online Master of Computer Science program – the first fully online degree program in the Faculty of Science at Laurier and the first of its kind in Canada.  The program addresses key areas of importance in computer science and will equip students with knowledge and skills to address some of the current challenges in our increasingly technology-driven society.” – Kenneth Maly, Ph.D, Acting Dean, Faculty of Science.

Keypath provides research and strategic support to its partners. This includes program-focused marketing, student recruitment, and student support services. The undergraduate policing programs supported in the initial partnership have exceeded projections by more than 70 percent.

Laurier has more than 19,000 students and is ranked sixth in Maclean’s comprehensive university category. It also ranked first in student satisfaction for the second year in a row.  As Laurier’s online program management partner, Keypath is helping the university diversify its enrolment to provinces outside Ontario.

“Keypath believes online learning will continue to grow at a rapid pace in Canada.  We believe with our partnership with Laurier they are positioned to be a leader in the online education degree space.  Launching the first fully online program in Computer Science demonstrates their commitment to reacting quickly to demand,” said Steve Fireng, global chief executive officer at Keypath Education
